2010 Music In Our Schools Survey

The Coalition is fielding a new survey in Spring 2010 to explore the status of music education in Canadian schools. There is virtually no publicly available research on the status and quality of music education in our schools beyond our 2005 survey. While research all over the world continues to prove the many benefits an education in music provides young people, we need to define the many challenges facing the delivery of such programs. At the same time, as many education ministries across the country talk to the value of music and the arts in the curriculum, it is important to understand what is happening at the grassroots where programs vary province to province, board to board, and school to school. We need to champion areas of excellence, identify areas of opportunity, and reveal the challenges.

The survey is being conducted by Hill Strategies and the full report will be published in Fall 2010. Our thanks to the sponsors and supporters of this survey.

"One of my choir students told me that when she moved to Canada, she wasn't nervous. She explained that although she did not speak English at the time, she spoke Music, and she knew that it was a language everyone understood."

Research
Music involves perception, memory, emotion, motor control, all the learning aspects. It brings together a lot of different functions in a very coherent way.
